He randomly creates conversations with me to tell me of his recent learning, such as the one below. We both have engineering degrees so it helps to speak in math terms sometimes with each other:

Infinity is the division of anything by zero.

= X/0 (If you want infinity of something, you must have 0 of something else.)

To achieve infinite wisdom, you must have zero ignorance, where ignorance is the lack of understanding of cause and effect.

Therefore, to achieve infinite wisdom, you must understand the karmic effect of your actions and what happens to you. Once you understand the karmic effect of your actions, it doesn’t matter what comes your way or what “X” is.

It is impossible to achieve infinite wisdom when we are continually inflicted by ignorance, even if the ignorant level is .000000001. Infinite wisdom is only possible with absolute zero of ignorance.

Bennett provides a good summary of America between 1988 and 2008. Bennett offers it from a political point of view, as expected because Bennet is first and foremost involved in politics, not as a politician, but as a political educator and advisor. He served under senior President Bush administration and his network, professional and social, was built on the steps of Capitol Hill. The book covered presidential elections from George H. W. Bush to Barack Obama, and international and domestic political policies. However, readers should expect limited coverage on culture, media, technology and social landscape. Any account of those coverage is a small percentage compared to the political coverage.

The book carries a personal voice and is sometimes subjective. For example, when Bennett defended what the media misreported about some of President Bush’s activities and policies, specifically in the first part of the book – his loyalty to Senior Bush is clearly evident. We see the political landscape of 1988 to 2008 from Bennett’s eyes through his own personal involvement and accounts. Overall, his perspective is optimistic and hopeful, which are great ingredients for a America’s next century.

Overall I like the book and recommend it to those who are interested in a quick recap of America’s political agenda between 1988 and 2008. It’s a fairly quick read.

Not in a philosophical way, but in a "what is the purpose of my life?" Your life specifically.

It doesn’t matter if you’re a single 40-year old father or a young international vagabond, at one time or another, this is the question that will change you.

PURPOSE

"But I went to Costa Rica!" the single father exclaimed, as if traveling should have given him internal peace towards finding purpose. He expected to find answers in the cloud forests of Costa Rica, where monkeys scream hourly in the deep vegetation of Monte Verde. Sadly, he came back with the same conscience – the answers were not there, and his mind remained unchanged.

I’ve been there, but my experience is not yours, and your experience is not mine. My answers are not yours; it will not satiate your needs, only my own.

So the single father is on this mission, triggered by the birth of his daughter three years ago, to do everything he can to raise her to be a wonderful, spectacular woman – he’s ambitious. He’s looking to build a legacy that his daughter can be proud of when she grows up. The challenge is – he doesn’t know what to do or what his life or passion is all about. How easy it would be to catch your dream and know exactly how you can make a difference in life.

“I don’t care if I’m forgotten, but I’d like to do something meaningful while I’m here, starting with raising my daughter. I want my daughter to become the most remarkable woman.” Unfortunately, although I admire his passion and ambition, I can’t help but think that his mission to make her into the world’s wonder woman will leave them both relentlessly unsatisfied, chasing an undefined dream.

FUN

“You will see that nothing really matters,” said the 60-year old guru, who runs a successful medical practice, to the young international vagabond. “So when you become successful, then what? When you get your higher education, then what? What else will you do? When will it be enough?”

The guru’s point to his student – it’s an endless cycle and you’re stressing out for what will become nothing.

“I just want to have fun,” said the young vagabond. “I don’t know what my future is going to be like (family, marriage, career, etc); I just want to have fun.” Sounds fair: if everything becomes nothing, have fun with everything. Why not? Fun includes good times, eating, drinking, sex, learning, growing, exploring, adventures – whatever floats your boat.

PURPOSE & FUN

From the young vagabond to the single father, maybe life is a convergence of purpose and fun. Those who say you can’t have your cake and eat it too are hungrily missing out, because…what’s the point if you don’t have a cake and why not eat it too?

I sat unmoved after the interview completed and the sound still – I was blown away by the short but loaded insight pact in by Seth Godin.

LIGHT BULB #1 – ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Seth distinctly compared entrepreneurs to freelancers, and if you confuse the two, meaning, you act like a freelancer but you think you’re an entrepreneur – that’s bad.

There’s nothing wrong with being a freelancer or an entrepreneur, but it could be detrimental when your actions are incongruent to your thoughts, and you don’t see the incongruence – then you’re just fooling yourself.

What is an entrepreneur? An entrepreneur works on the system (the business as a separate entity) that is bigger than the entrepreneur that even makes money while the entrepreneur is sleeping.

LIGHT BULB #2 – BUILDING COMMUNITIES

Do the work that scares you. Don’t be busy with Facebook, Twitter, and comments if it only make you “busy.” Are you really connecting with people or is your interaction just short lapse of momentary applause? People love to be busy because it feeds the resistance to do work that actually makes a difference in their community and connecting people.

LIGHT BULB #3 – DO MEANINGFUL WORK

David asked Seth about his process used to create and do work. Seth replied that his process and map should not be other’s map – it may not work for other people. The only thing in common about people who built great things is that they’ve built great things – the great things they’ve built. There aren’t any other commonalities such as their backgrounds, process, or methods.

That’s why they call it art – it’s your creation, even the process is part of your creation. Entrepreneurship is an art – what and how you do your work have yet to be defined and duplicated. The effort isn’t to be busy but doing the necessary and scary work that is productive.

Thank you David Siteman Garland. (Why do you use a middle name?)

What is entrepreneurship?

Sandy at Chase Bank is my new hero. She made a difference. She’s a linchpin.

On a Saturday afternoon I visited a Chase branch to do some typical banking, one of which was to get a service fee waived on a dormant inactive business checking account.

Maggie, my bank manager whom I have been doing business for a couple of years, came to greet me as I waited After a brief exchange, she said someone would be with me and I sat down, and waited.

In a few minutes, Sandy, a bank representative, called my name and I followed her to her desk. I took a seat and explained the specific service fee that I was requesting to be waived.

I elaborated the intricacies of the problem I have with this service fee. The details aren’t really significant in this story. But as a representative, she was not authorized to make such decisions. However, she did understand my concerns.

Then I did the unexpected thing, I smiled.

I smiled because suddenly, I wanted to test out a theory – people will try to help if you are friendly, and if you are friendly, people will try their best to do the best. I wanted to test out another theory – even with all the technologies and corporate structure in institutions, people still run the world.

So I bought a couple of more minutes to sow the seeds. I asked for a copy of the disclosures that was mailed to notify me of the imminent service fee that I overlooked. I asked for a status update of all my accounts, personal and business. I wanted to remind them that I had a vested interest in my banking relationship. As Sandy was printing the copies and thoroughly summarizing my accounts, we started chatting about non-banking stuff. I found out that Sandy used to live in Montebello and has been working at WAMU for 8 years. She likes the change from WAMU to Chase because Chase offers more products.

As I reviewed the information Sandy presented me, I brought up the fee one more time. This time, she called in the manager.

So we called Maggie, the branch manager.

Maggie came and initially apologized that she couldn’t take off the fee because she would have to explain to upper management and repeated that since this was not a bank error, she was not allowed to waive the fee, not even as a courtesy. And, she further explained, since WAMU became Chase, Chase is not that lenient of waiver fees unless it is specifically a bank error.

But I smiled Maggie. I smiled because this is a by the corporate book play, and managers are instructed in black and white.

Then suddenly, Sandy, in a moment of brilliance, came up with a solution out of thin air. As the branch manager was thoroughly explaining why she couldn’t waive the fee, Sandy sat quietly, did nothing, but think.

She was thinking about a solution to help me. She was too busy thinking to tell me she couldn’t help me. She was busy thinking yes, because saying no doesn’t require too much thinking.

Saying yes requires thinking.

Sandy brilliantly connected all my banking products and linked them in a way that qualified my business checking account to meet the fine print of Chase’s policy. She also thought of a way to effectively avoid service fees on my account which meant that the charged service fee in question could be waived, as my account was indeed within the terms of the bank’s policy.

Sandy excited explained her solution to Maggie, so Maggie could justify it to upper management.

Linchpins rule the world.

Too often, customer representatives are quick to say no. Companies pay for them to do the task at hand, not to think. Then sometimes, you meet a Sandy. Sandy thinks. She wants to help the customer. She’s creative and innovative with her simple job. That makes her a linchpin – someone’s who indispensable. Creativity and innovations are not measurable like a resume, and you can’t put a price on creativity and innovations because they’re priceless. Being priceless makes you indispensable – a linchpin.

It’s not about doing better at what others are doing, it’s doing what others aren’t doing at all. That makes a difference. That makes you a linchpin and Sandy is a linchpin.

Want to go to Berkeley, Ivy League schools, NYU, or UCLA but unable to? Well, now you can tap into the brilliant minds at these institutions. Similarly, as TED spreads ideas, I get to increase my knowledge and be inspired instantly by the brilliant minds of today as they exist anywhere in the world.

Buckminster Fuller wrote in his last published book, the Critical Path, "Those who can educate themselves will be almost entirely free to invent their own work & realize the full benefits of their own productivity.”

In the Information Age, the power belongs to the individual. The question is, what are the individuals going to do with all this knowledge as it becomes free and available? The internet has become inundated with knowledge, opinions, advice, and conversations? There is a lot of talking, commenting, blogging and exchange of goodwill. Talk is no longer cheap, it’s free.

If abundance decreases demand, will the value of higher education decrease? Eventually, yes. However, higher education creates conversations and opportunities. But if social media evens those playing fields, what will become of higher education institution? I would assume that social media will democratize education once people have access to it.

The only difference is what one does with access to knowledge. But then again, hasn’t that always been a measuring stick -performance and results?

In the ocean of conversations in cyberspace where talk and sharing is plentiful, it will be actions, initiatives, and impact that make the difference.

Feminism is an old word. The concept is no stranger to us. Every one of us has been influenced whether indirectly or directly by this movement that started in the mid 1800’s. When Hilary Clinton ran for the presidency in this last election, she broke 18 millions cracks in the glass ceiling with 18 million Americans who supported her presidential bid. That was the biggest moment of what the feminist movement was all about: women power.

The feminist movement was and still is very strong in our society today. From it, I like many other women, became exceedingly independent and believed that I also have the same, if not more, capacity than my male classmates or colleagues.

Women today have conquered many obstacles and sit on any panel or board in any business, academic, or social institutions that was once only reserved for men. Gloria Steinem and her foremothers have done women great justice in fighting for opportunities and equality by turning walls into doors and walkways. And it is something that no women, including myself, must take for granted.

But I’m afraid, that in some ways, women have. There are some things that society did not foresee and bargained for in the rise of the modern feminists. And so we must take a moment to reassess the effects of the feminist movement because there are great loses that affect those who have no voice or choice in it all.

However great a woman’s accomplishment is in business, in her profession, like Carly Fiorina of HP or Marissa Mayer of Google or any other working or executive moms, you can’t deny the children of these powerful women who were raised in day orphanages they call day care. For every promotion a mother achieves in corporate America, one more infant is sacrificed to be in the care of by strangers, by day caregivers, for those 18 million cracks. Newborns as early as days and weeks old enter day cares because women are eager to go back to work because they have something to prove. And she doesn’t need a day off, she’s all powerful. She doesn’t need to bond with her child or show feminine emotions; she’s a feminist, equal to all men.

Single women, like me, enjoy our independence and opportunities. But I think the rules change when a woman’s decision affects other people. So mothers need to revaluate the real application of women power and the feminist movement.

Because god forbid a modern woman today to keep a marriage together and the household intact so kids grow up in a loving family instead of broken homes. She’s a feminist. She has rights and power afforded to her by her foremothers. What about her feelings and her needs? And everything that she’s ever wanted to be, do, and have? Well, she can do anything, can’t she? The feminist movement said so. Or is it a case of power abuse? For every woman powerful roar at the cost of another human being, she takes the feminist movement for granted. She sacrifices her children, her husband, and her family, and ultimately society. We know this because children reflect the values in our society. When girls trade in their self worth for temporary self esteem, society loses. When boys are raised as males and not as men, society loses. We need mothers, not executive working child bearers. We need homes, not houses.

And although I believe that a woman can have it all, it comes with a price. A price I’m beginning to see is too high to continue to pay for self indulgence: marriage, commitment, children, family, social values, moral responsibility. They’re sacrificed in the name of the feminist movement. Women win when we can make our own choices based on our own agenda, not on someone else’s agenda. The feminist movement gave women choices and that’s power, but empowerment comes from not having to prove anything to anyone.

In reassessing feminism, feminism is a single women’s game not a wife or mother’s game. Wives and mothers have greater callings than try to break household items like glass ceilings.

I had to call a plumber out to snake a clog from the kitchen. He quoted me $55, good price (a home warranty would have charged me the same), but when he came, he "added on" $10 for another action of opening the pipes underneath the sink. I could have argued with him or call out another plumber, get another quote, etc. but I didn’t. He seemed like a nice guy and it’s only $10.

His gave me an explanation but when I watched him do the job, I saw that he only snaked the clog from the outside and he could have just let the water drain through the pipes without having to open up the pipes underneath the sink. I realized that he didn’t need to open the pipes underneath the sink. I could have argued with him and showed that he didn’t need to take another action besides what he was supposed to do, snaking it out from the outside, and the sink would drain without opening up the pipes underneath the sink, all for $10, but I didn’t. He seemed like a nice young guy, 27. In fact, after he was done, I even paid him extra because he did a good job and because it was raining outside and he was all wet from the job.

He even confirmed my assumption by explaining to me that the next time I get this kind of clog, all I would need to do is open the opening from the outside and the water from the sink would drain, obviously not needing to open the pipes underneath the sink to drain the excess water.

Later, I thought whether he up-sold me intentionally just for $10, or whether he felt bad for his business practice since I "tipped" him even after his ridiculous explanation.

This is not to say that I’m perfect, because I am not. If my assumption is true, technically, I just bought the plumber’s character for $10. Regardless, I didn’t keep it and gave it back with goodwill because I had seen through him and I know. I know and keep my own ego in check, because I learned that the person who loses is the person that sold out – not the person who overpaid or got scammed. I’m not here to preach about karma or bad business practice, but point out that it’s about self-ignorance.

When people sell out for any amount of money, they put a price on their self-worth, and that is always a losing battle.

Instead of a pot of gold, I rather find character at the end the rainbow.

It’s like saying, thanks for the power and equality, but feminism really messed up my head. Feminism gave women the go-card to be, do, and have everything that they want, one of which was to have Mr. Perfect, and not settling for less than Mr. Right. Waiting for Mr. Right who is absolutely perfect in everyway is the consequence of the having it all mentality. But, perhaps, as Lori Gottlieb also said, women confuse “having it all” with “happily-ever-after.”

Lori Gottlieb offered her own stories as well as many other familiar stories of women who after lessons learned, married him, the Good Enough guy that they were comfortable, safe, and felt in-love with, after, not before, their relationship took off. The book serve as a collection of hindsight from her dating experience and what she knows about relationship and social expectations as women age.

Having some dose of feminism early on, I can see the many weak points of feminism such as sense of entitlement, unrealistic expectations, self-righteousness and self-fulfilling, Within the last few years, feminism is being heavily debated about, in regards to the effect and consequences of social life. Books like Marry Him is contributing to the reassessment of feminism. We should be seeing a shift in social dynamics as women analyze the effects of feminism.

Lori Gottlieb’s advice is to marry your good-enough boyfriend and stop looking for Mr. Right. However, her opponents remind women to not settle and instead hold out for Mr. Right and that being alone and single is better than being with Mr. Right-Now who is not perfect

I say, to hell with these two crazy platforms and stop letting books, writers, and editorials dictate your life. Take control of your life and make up your own mind and live your own life. Stop blaming the feminist movement, Hollywood, or your mother. At some point you reach an expiration to blame your life on anyone else, so while I agree with some insights from Marry Him, I don’t buy that “feminism fucked up my life.” Go get a new life.

It was another great meeting with people wanting to improve their communications skills and the company is always full of welcoming and supportive members. The speeches usually vary in peaking my interest but I found myself thinking about a speech that was given at this Toastmasters meeting. He spoke about this one THING. That one thing that everyone needs, but everyone has it, yet everyone is looking for it. You don’t know what it looks like or tastes like, but you know when you have it, because you know what it feels like. You can’t buy it but most people will try to sell it. Some people show it but they don’t know that they have it. It’s humbling. When you get it, you can do anything. It’s powerful.

It’s INSPIRATION.

He talked about going through a transition in his life and he was searching for inspiration. He would carry a notebook around with him to record inspirations he saw or heard. He was inspired when he learned that Taylor Swift’s co-song writer was a stay at home mom with no commercial song writing experience and that Paula Deen, a FoodTv Network star, started her cooking phenomenon when she was in her 50’s.

It made me think. Why do we need inspiration and where do we look for inspiration? And what do you do with the inspiration that we desperately need and find, after searching in all corners of the world?

What is inspiration?

Inspiration is when your thinking is aligned with your core, your natural talents, the natural frequency of your make up. What comes out of your feeling inspired (ideas, words, thoughts, actions, feelings) is resonance when your natural frequency is excited by that inspiration. Inspiration leads us to our self nature, allows us to act at our highest potential and reach for higher existence.

Where do we look for inspiration?

Inspiration can be other people’s actions. What they do and how they act inspire us because we recognize that which we want to do, act, and essentially, be. People’s actions, words, and thoughts, ring true to our instincts. When we see kindness or hear compassion and wisdom, we are inspired to be kind, compassion, and wise. When we see how a person handles conflict and drama with ease, confidence, and character, we are inspired by their actions and words.

Watching President Obama’s Q&A with a room of Republican congressmen, all by himself, candidly, I was inspired. I was in awe that he took on a room of his fiercest political opponents. Nothing really come from political debates, dialogues are not decisions, except to refine political image. However, I was inspired by President Obama’s intelligence, confidence, goals, humility, and the respect and courage he showed to the lawmakers of the land. I was inspired because what I saw and heard is something that I want to become and see myself as – someone who is intelligent, confident, humble, respectful, and courageous in general, and even in the face of people that disagree with me.

Inspiration can come through people’s stories. The story of Ally and Noah in the Notebook inspires love. The story of Liz Murray, Homeless to Harvard, inspires courage and triumph. Movies, music, current events, everyday personal events contain some kind of inspiration when we see glimpse of self nature exuberate.

Why do we need inspiration?

Inspiration is like air, you need it to be alive. In everything that you do, inspiration lights the fire for personal growth, creativity and innovation. We need inspiration to complete the work we need to do to fulfill our purpose. Any artists will suffer in lack of creativity or focus and there’s nothing like a dose of inspiration that makes creativity flow and focus a force to be reckon with.

What do we do after we find inspiration?

So when you find your spark of inspiration, what do you do? There isn’t too much of a choice. When inspiration knocks you over, that message of inspiration tells you what to do in your work. It takes over you – as if it’s a separate entity that use you as its muse. The best thing to do is to listen to it and follow through. Otherwise, external friction tampers with the natural frequency that is inspiration.
